Lawn Maintenance in Lorton, VA

Lorton yards come in two broad types. Newer homes in the Laurel Hill area, built on former Lorton Reformatory land after the prison closed in 2001, often have younger lawns on graded ground. Established neighborhoods and the wooded lots toward the Occoquan River and Pohick Bay have mature trees, shade, and heavy leaf drop. Our lawn maintenance plans start by figuring out which one you have. Our Lorton area page covers the rest of what we do here.

Rules Near the Water and the Woods

About half of the lower Occoquan watershed in southern Fairfax County is under a Watershed Protection Overlay that limits development to one home per five acres, which is why so much of the area stays densely wooded. Lots near the Occoquan, Pohick Bay, and their tributaries may also be in a Fairfax County Resource Protection Area, where clearing and lawn expansion are restricted. For lawn care, that means we work on the turf you have rather than cutting into the trees for more, and we keep leaves, clippings, and loose soil out of streams.

How We Care for Lorton Lawns

Newer Lots Around Laurel Hill

Younger lawns on graded soil tend to root shallowly, so Yard Aeration each fall is the most useful thing we do, followed by overseeding. Mowing and Edging keeps the turf at a height that shades the soil, and we edge walks and curbs every visit. If your home has irrigation, Sprinkler Maintenance in spring and Winterization before freezing nights keep the system in working order.

Wooded and Established Lots

Here the work shifts toward the trees. Leaf Cleanup usually takes more than one pass, since leaves keep dropping into late fall. Debris Cleanup clears limbs after storms. Pruning reshapes mature shrubs that have outgrown their spots, and Power Raking removes the thatch that builds up in shaded lawns where grass grows slowly.

We cover all of Lorton, from Laurel Hill near the Workhouse Arts Center to homes near Pohick Church and Occoquan Regional Park.

Our estimate costs nothing. We walk the property, talk through what matters most to you, and follow up with a written quote listing each service. One crew does the work from then on.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I expand my lawn into the wooded part of my lot?

Maybe not. Lots near the Occoquan, Pohick Bay, and their tributaries may be in a Fairfax County Resource Protection Area, where clearing and lawn expansion are restricted. We help you keep the lawn you have healthy instead.

My Laurel Hill lawn is thin and hard. What do you recommend?

Core aeration in early fall, followed by overseeding. Lawns on graded soil are often compacted, which keeps roots shallow. Doing this each fall, along with mowing tall, thickens the turf over a few seasons.

How do you handle leaves on lots near Pohick Bay?

We remove them from the lawn and beds and haul them off rather than blowing them toward the water or the street. Wooded lots usually need more than one visit, and we schedule them around the drop.

Do newer homes need pruning?

Yes, and early pruning pays off. Young shrubs shaped lightly each year stay full and in proportion. Waiting until they crowd windows and walks means harder cuts later that take longer to recover.

What does sprinkler maintenance include?

Spring startup, a check of every zone, adjusting or replacing broken heads, fixing spray that hits pavement, and setting run times for the season. In fall we come back for winterization before freezing weather.
