Fire Features & Patios Services We Offer
Fire Features & Patios in Fairfax, VA
A Fairfax mailing address does not always mean the City of Fairfax. Some homes sit inside city limits, while many others with the same address are in Fairfax County, and that difference matters when a project needs a permit. We sort it out at the start of every fire features and patios job, so your patio, grill station, or fire pit is built under the right rules. More about our local work is on the Fairfax service area page.
City Limits, Old Town, and Stream Valleys
Inside the city, permits for gas lines and larger structures go through the City of Fairfax. Outside it, Fairfax County handles them. If your home is in or near the City of Fairfax Historic District around Old Town and the courthouse built in 1800, exterior work may need extra review, and we ask the city before choosing materials.
The city is the headwaters of Accotink Creek, and Daniels Run rises here before flowing into it. In practice, a lot of Fairfax yards tilt toward one of those stream valleys. That makes drainage part of the design: we pitch the patio surface, plan where runoff ends up, and avoid funneling water off hard surfaces straight at a neighbor or a creek.
From Patio to Pizza Oven
- Patios are the base layer, built on compacted stone so the clay underneath does not heave the pavers out of line.
- Stone work adds borders, steps, and walls, and it is how we make a new patio look like it belongs beside an older brick or stone house.
- Fire pits come round, square, or as linear gas versions, placed with safe distance from the house and trees.
- Outdoor grills get a masonry island with counter space and storage below.
- Smokers need a level, heat-tolerant spot with room for airflow, which we build into the layout from the start.
- Pizza ovens sit on a reinforced foundation, since a masonry oven is heavy and clay soil will not carry it alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I am in the City of Fairfax or Fairfax County?
Your mailing address alone will not tell you. We check your property against city limits before quoting, because the city handles permits inside its boundaries and the county handles everything outside them.
Does the Old Town historic district affect patio projects?
It can, for homes in or near the City of Fairfax Historic District. Exterior changes there may need review. We ask the city what applies to your address and choose materials that fit.
My backyard drains toward a creek. Is that a problem?
Not if we plan for it. Much of the city drains toward Accotink Creek or Daniels Run, so we grade the patio to shed water gently and avoid concentrating runoff where it could cut into a slope.
Can you build a pizza oven on my existing patio?
Only if the base underneath can carry the weight. Most older patios cannot, so we usually build a dedicated footing for the oven and tie the surrounding pavers into it.
When is a good time to start a patio project?
We build most of the year, whenever the ground is not frozen or saturated. Scheduling the estimate in winter often means the patio is finished in time for the first warm spring evenings.
