Spring Lawn Care Checklist for Virginia Yards

Spring is when your lawn wakes up, and the moves you make now set the tone for the whole year. Work through this checklist in order for a thicker, healthier Northern Virginia lawn.

1. Clean Up First

Rake out winter debris, fallen branches, and matted leaves so light and air reach the soil. A thorough debris cleanup gives new growth room to come in evenly.

2. Dethatch and Aerate Compacted Soil

Winter leaves soil compacted. Power raking removes built-up thatch, and core aeration opens the ground so roots can breathe and drink.

3. Overseed Thin Areas

Fill bare and thin spots with quality seed so the lawn thickens before summer weeds move in. A dense lawn is the best weed control there is.

4. Start Mowing Right

  • Sharpen the mower blade before the first cut.
  • Mow high, around three inches, and never remove more than a third at once.
  • Get back on a regular schedule as growth picks up.

Do these in the right order and your lawn rewards you all season. Prefer to hand it off? Our lawn maintenance crews run spring programs for homeowners across Northern Virginia.

Weed Prevention and Feeding

Spring is your best chance to get ahead of weeds. A pre-emergent applied at the right time, generally when soil temperatures reach the low fifties and forsythia blooms, stops crabgrass and many annual weeds before they sprout, but the timing window is narrow and it will not work once weeds are already up. Pair that with a balanced feeding once the lawn is actively growing to fuel steady green-up. Avoid the temptation to dump heavy fertilizer early; a moderate, well-timed feeding beats a heavy one that pushes weak, disease-prone growth.

Don’t Rush the Season

Eager homeowners often do more harm than good in early spring. Walking on or working soggy, thawing soil compacts it and damages tender grass. Mowing before the lawn is truly growing, or scalping it low, stresses plants right when they are waking up. And watering is rarely needed until the weather warms and dries. Let the lawn tell you it is ready: consistent growth, firm ground underfoot, and green-up across the whole yard. Working with the season instead of ahead of it gives you a thicker, more resilient lawn heading into summer.

Build the Routine That Carries the Year

Spring sets the pattern the rest of the season follows. Once you have cleaned up, dethatched or aerated where needed, overseeded thin spots, timed your pre-emergent, and started mowing high with a sharp blade, the summer job becomes mostly consistent mowing and smart watering. Lawns that get a strong, well-sequenced spring need far less rescue work in July and August. Think of these early weeks as the foundation: a little effort in the right order now means a thicker, more weed-resistant lawn all the way through fall. If spring gets away from you, a local crew can knock out the cleanup, aeration, overseeding, and first feeding in a single visit so your lawn never falls behind.
