How to Choose a Landscaping Company in Northern Virginia
October 8, 2026
Hiring the right crew is the difference between a yard you enjoy for years and a project you end up paying to redo. There is no shortage of landscaping companies in Northern Virginia, from one-truck mowing operations to large regional firms. A few direct questions sort them out quickly.
Licensing and Insurance Come First
Ask for proof of insurance before anyone sets foot on your property. At a minimum, a company should carry general liability coverage, and if it has employees, workers’ compensation. If a worker is hurt in your yard or a machine damages your neighbor’s fence, you want that handled by the contractor’s policy, not yours.
Licensing depends on the work. Virginia’s Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) licenses contractors, and you can look up a license on its website in a few minutes. Hardscape, larger construction, and anything that needs a permit should be done by a properly licensed contractor. Companies that apply fertilizers or pesticides commercially also need state certification. If someone gets vague when you ask about any of this, take note.
Look at Real Work, Not Just Photos
Ask to see examples of projects similar to yours. A company that mostly mows may not be the right fit for a retaining wall, and a hardscape specialist may not be who you want for weekly lawn maintenance. For hardscape, ask how old the work in the photos is. Any patio looks good the week it is finished. The real test is how it looks after a few Northern Virginia winters, with no sunken pavers, wide joints, or heaved edges.
Ask about the parts you cannot see. For a paver patio, that means how deep the base is and how it is compacted. For a retaining wall, ask about drainage stone behind the wall and whether a taller wall will have engineered plans. A good contractor will happily explain this. A weak one will steer the conversation back to price.
Get a Written Estimate You Can Compare
A verbal number is not an estimate. A useful written estimate spells out:
- The exact scope of work, including materials, quantities, and finishes
- Who handles HOA submissions, permits, and Virginia 811 utility marking
- Site preparation, cleanup, and haul-away of debris
- The payment schedule, including the deposit and when the balance is due
- An approximate start date and how weather delays are handled
When you compare bids, compare scope, not just the bottom line. A lower price often means a thinner base, less drainage, or cleanup left to you. Be cautious with any contractor who wants most of the money up front or pressures you to sign the same day.
Local Experience Matters Here
Northern Virginia has its own quirks. Our heavy clay soil drains poorly and compacts easily. Freeze and thaw cycles move anything built on a weak base. Most lawns are tall fescue, which is overseeded in fall, not spring. Many neighborhoods are planned communities with HOA rules about plant choices, fence styles, and hardscape materials. A company that works here every day plans for all of that from the start, so you are not finding out about drainage problems or HOA objections halfway through the job.
Ask a prospective contractor how they would handle water on your lot, what they would plant in your sun conditions, and what your HOA is likely to require. Their answers will tell you a lot. If you want a sense of how we think through common projects, our landscaping tips and guides cover everything from drainage to fencing.
Pay Attention to Communication
Communication matters as much as skill, and it is often the best predictor of how a job will go. Did they call back when they said they would? Did they show up on time for the estimate? Did they listen to what you want, or push a package before walking the yard? A good contractor explains the options and tradeoffs, tells you when something is not worth doing, and keeps the job site clean at the end of every day.
