Retaining Walls Services We Offer
Retaining Walls in Springfield, VA
A lot of the homes in North and West Springfield went up between the 1950s and the 1970s, and so did many of the walls holding their yards in place. Some of those walls have done their job for decades. Others are tilting, cracking at the joints, or quietly rotting. We handle both repair and new retaining wall work throughout the area, and the Springfield service area page lists everything else we do here.
What Accotink Creek Teaches About Erosion
Springfield drains to Accotink Creek, which runs through Lake Accotink Park. That lake has a long history of sediment buildup from runoff upstream, a plain reminder of how far loose soil travels once it starts moving. When we build here, we try to keep every bit of your soil on your lot: walls with stone backfill and drain lines, outlets that release water gently, and planted slopes instead of bare ones. Most of these older lots sit on Piedmont clay, which drains slowly and swells when wet, so a wall without stone backfill tends to lean over time.
If your yard backs onto a perennial stream, part of it may be inside a Fairfax County Resource Protection Area. Clearing or grading there needs county approval, so we look at the property line and the stream before we sketch anything. Permits for walls in Springfield go through Fairfax County.
Matching the Service to the Yard
For walls that have started to fail, Retaining Wall Repair means finding out why, and it is usually water. We dig behind the wall, clear or add drainage, and reset or rebuild the section that moved. For a fresh start, Retaining Wall Installation gives you segmental block or stone on a proper base. Where a slope is simply washing away, Erosion Control may solve it without a tall wall at all. And when a wall needs real height, has to carry a load, or sits near a foundation, Engineered Wall Blueprints give the county and you a design worth trusting.
We price every job after seeing it. The estimate is free, the quote comes in writing with the details spelled out, and the crew that starts your wall is the crew that finishes it.

Frequently Asked Questions
My wall dates from the 1960s and has started to lean. Is it worth saving?
Sometimes. If the lean is in one section and the stone or block is still sound, we can rebuild that part with new drainage. Old timber walls usually need full replacement. We give you both options when both make sense.
Do I need Fairfax County approval for a wall near a stream?
Very possibly. Land within a Resource Protection Area along perennial streams has limits on clearing and grading. We check whether your yard is in one and help you work through the county process if it is.
Why is drainage behind a wall such a big deal?
Water trapped behind a wall adds weight and pressure. Without drainage stone and a way out, that pressure pushes the wall forward. Most failed walls we see in older Springfield neighborhoods failed because of water, not the block.
Can you build around mature trees?
Usually, yes. We plan the wall line to stay clear of major roots where possible and adjust the layout if a tree is too close. Cutting through big roots can harm the tree and weaken the slope it holds.
What should I have ready for the estimate?
Nothing special. It helps to know roughly where your property lines are, where downspouts drain, and any HOA rules if you have them. We bring measuring tools and material samples.
